Mainland self-employed permit requires Norwegian contracts — not a true DNV. Svalbard archipelago is visa-free indefinitely for any nationality (Svalbard Treaty 1920) but lacks healthcare/social-security access; cold climate.
Tax treatment
- Becomes tax resident: Mainland: after 183 days in 12mo or 270 in 36mo. Svalbard: separate Svalbard tax regime (16% flat) for residents.
- Flat-rate regime: 16%
- Special regime: Svalbard: 8% PIT (rises to 16% over higher brackets) under Svalbard Taxation Act
- Foreign income: Mainland resident: worldwide income at progressive 22% PIT + bracket tax (1.7%–17.5%) + 8.2% social. Svalbard: only Svalbard-source income, flat 8/16% PIT.
Mainland Norway is high-tax. Svalbard's tax regime is uniquely attractive but the location (Longyearbyen, polar climate) is a hard ask. Wealth tax 0.85%-1.1% on net worth >NOK 1.7M (USD ~160K) mainland.
Remote work requirements

- Salaried vs freelance: self-employed only

- Children under 18: Yes
- Dependent adult children: No
- Parents dependent: No
Family reunification on mainland; Svalbard requires independent means but no formal family threshold.

Recent changes
- 2020-01-01
Norway allowed dual citizenship — major change for US-Norway dual eligibles.
- 2023-2025
No formal DNV launched despite advocacy; mainland self-employed route requires Norwegian clients; Svalbard remains the global 'visa-free anyone' anomaly.
Notes
Norway has no formal DNV. Mainland self-employed requires Norwegian clients (not a nomad route). Svalbard is uniquely visa-free but uniquely difficult (Arctic, no healthcare, no social services, must be self-supporting). For practical purposes, Norway is NOT a nomad destination.
