Income requirements

  • Monthly minimum (USD): $4K
  • Monthly minimum (native): 4,400 USD
  • Savings alternative: $74K

Last 6-12 months bank statements showing USD 4,400/mo NET (~MXN 75K) OR 12-month balance averaging USD 74K

Economic Solvency route: USD 4,400+/mo income for 6+ months OR USD 74K average balance for 12 months. Thresholds rise annually with Mexican minimum wage.

Tax treatment

  • Becomes tax resident: After establishing 'casa habitación' (habitual home) AND no equivalent abroad — center of vital interests test
  • Flat-rate regime: 2%
  • Special regime: RESICO (Régimen Simplificado de Confianza) — 1-2.5% turnover tax for individuals up to MXN 3.5M (~USD 205K)/yr
  • Foreign income: If tax-resident: worldwide income at progressive PIT 1.92%–35%. RESICO scheme applies to professional services up to MXN 3.5M. Foreign tax credits available.

Mexico's RESICO is one of LatAm's most attractive small-business tax schemes. Combined with Temporary Resident permit (not auto-tax-resident), nomads can structure favorably. US-Mexico DTA prevents double taxation.

  • Local clients allowed: No
  • Local employment allowed: No
  • Self-employed accepted: Yes
  • Salaried vs freelance: both

Family inclusion

Recent changes

  1. 2022-2024

Income thresholds rose with annual minimum-wage hikes (Mexican min wage doubled 2018-2024).

  2. 2024

Some consulates (Mexico City, Madrid, Toronto) tightened proof requirements; many US-resident applicants moving to Houston/Laredo consulates for easier approval.

Notes

Mexico Temporary Resident is the gold-standard de-facto DNV for US persons: easy USD 74K savings route, 4-year path to PR, 5-year to citizenship + Spanish-speaking + LATAM passport mobility. Big jump in income thresholds 2022-2024 has made it less accessible than 2018 but still highly competitive.
