Tax treatment
- Becomes tax resident: Japan's 1-year-rule + 5-of-10-year rule. DNV holders stay <6 months — non-resident
- Special regime: DNV holders not Japan tax-residents during 6-month stay
- Foreign income: Foreign income not taxed during 6-month DNV stay (non-resident treatment).
Japan resident taxation is among Asia's strictest (worldwide income at 5-45% PIT + 10% prefectural inhabitant tax). DNV avoids this by 6-month limit.

Recent changes
- 2024-04-01
Japan DNV launched as 'Designated Activities No. 53'.
- 2024-2025
Uptake modest — 6-month non-renewable + high income floor limit appeal. Japan PR via HSP visa (Highly Skilled Professional) more substantive option.
Notes
Japan DNV is short (6 months, non-renewable, 6-month cool-down) + high income (USD 68K) + private health insurance + 49-country list. Best as a 'try-Japan' interlude before HSP or business-manager visa for permanence.
