Payslips/contracts for 3+ months showing ISK 1,000,000 per month (single) or ISK 1,300,000 (with spouse)

ISK 1,000,000 (~USD 7,200) monthly for single applicant; ISK 1,300,000 (~USD 9,400) for couple. One of the highest DNV income floors globally.

Tax treatment

  • Becomes tax resident: DNV holders are STATUTORILY exempt from tax residency for the 6-month stay
  • Special regime: Statutory non-resident treatment during DNV
  • Foreign income: Foreign income earned during DNV stay is NOT taxable in Iceland (statutory exemption similar to Croatia).

Iceland DNV is explicitly designed to NOT trigger tax residency. Combined with 6-month max stay, applicants never cross the 183-day residency threshold.

Remote work requirements

  • Local clients allowed: No
  • Local employment allowed: No
  • Self-employed accepted: Yes
  • Salaried vs freelance: both

Family inclusion

  • Spouse: Yes
  • Children under 18: Yes
  • Dependent adult children: No
  • Parents dependent: No
  • + Income per dependent: $2K

Spouse and minor children covered; income requirement rises to ISK 1.3M/mo for couples.

Path to PR & citizenship

Permanent residency

  • Available: No

DNV time does not count toward PR or naturalization. Iceland does not formally lead from DNV to long-term status.

Citizenship

  • Available: No

Naturalization requires 7 years legal residence on other permits + Icelandic language test. DNV doesn't count.

Eligibility requirements

  • Non-EEA/Swiss citizen of visa-waiver country
  • Remote employment with foreign company OR own foreign business
  • ISK 1M+/mo income (single) or 1.3M (couple)
  • Clean criminal record
  • Health insurance
  • Accommodation in Iceland

Disqualifiers

  • Icelandic employer or clients
  • Already 90+ days in Schengen in prior 180 days at time of application

Recent changes

  1. 2020-10

    Iceland Remote Worker Visa launched.

  2. 2023-2024

Income threshold raised to ISK 1M (single)/1.3M (couple) due to inflation.

Notes

Iceland's DNV is short (6mo non-renewable) and expensive (highest income floor in EU), but offers a clean no-tax-residency status and Schengen mobility. Best for HNW nomads wanting a brief Nordic chapter — not a long-term base.
