How Luxembourgish citizenship by descent works
The eligibility rules for Luxembourgish citizenship by descent, in plain English — who may qualify, what disqualifies, and the legal regimes over time, each cited to its primary statute.
Who may qualify
A qualifying path — via the jure sanguinis route
Requirements
ALL of the following
the applicant has a qualifying descent path (satisfies art7).
- satisfies art7:
- true
the qualifying ancestor must have held luxembourgish citizenship at the moment the applicant was born, passing it down the line by descent.
- required citizenship:
- luxembourgish
Primary sources
- § Nationality Law of 8 March 2017, Art. 7 — descent through an all-male lineage to a Luxembourg-born ancestor (born within current borders before a rolling cutoff that increments by 1 year each 1 January; ~before 19 April 1948 as of 1 Jan 2026); for applicants born from 1969-01-01, a SINGLE maternal link is permitted only if the mother herself carries an all-male qualifying lineage. Unlimited generational reach (no statutory cap). Art. 7 imposes NO condition that intermediate ancestors did not acquire a foreign nationality: the 2017 law abolished all automatic loss on foreign naturalization (Arts. 55–64 enumerate loss only by renonciation or déchéance), so no naturalization chain-break gate applies (Loi du 8 mars 2017, texte coordonné, Arts. 7, 55–64, 77 — mj.gouvernement.lu official PDF, verified 2026-05-28).
