Ireland: Foreign Births Register processing time now about 12 months
The EasyPassport Team ยท 2026-06-21
What changed
The Irish Department of Foreign Affairs now states that, due to the complex nature of the process, a completed Foreign Birth Registration takes approximately 12 months to process. Earlier guidance (early 2025) cited roughly nine to ten months.
Why it matters
Foreign Birth Registration is the route by which a person born abroad with an Irish grandparent (or an Irish-citizen parent who was themselves registered before the applicant's birth) is entered on the Foreign Births Register and becomes an Irish citizen. The longer timeline is a processing-time update only; eligibility rules are unchanged.
