Canada: proof-of-citizenship wait edges up to 34 months, the smallest monthly rise since the backlog surge began

What changed
IRCC updated its published processing times on 9 October 2026. An application for proof of Canadian citizenship (a citizenship certificate) is now quoted at roughly 34 months, up from 33 months in the September update. You can check the current figure on the IRCC processing times tool by selecting Citizenship, then Citizenship certificate (proof of citizenship).
Why this one is different
This is the smallest monthly movement since the backlog began climbing, and it follows the largest. The published trajectory this year has run roughly 12 months in May, 19 in July, 25 in August, 33 in early September and 34 in October. A one-month rise after an eight-month jump suggests the steep phase may be levelling off, though one data point is not a trend.
What it does not change
Who qualifies. Eligibility under the Bill C-3 regime, in force since 15 December 2025, is unchanged.
This is a wait for the document that proves citizenship you already hold by descent - not a decision on whether you are a citizen.
Quoted times are estimates for a complete application, not a maximum or a guarantee.
A note on the headlines
Coverage of this update recirculates older figures - 25 months and 33 months - alongside the new one, which can make a single change look like several. Match the number to the update date before drawing conclusions.
