Canada: IRCC quoting about 9 to 12 months for proof-of-citizenship as Bill C-3 lifts demand

What changed

As of April 2026, IRCC is quoting approximately 9 to 12 months for proof-of-citizenship applications, the route used for citizenship by descent.

• Bill C-3 (in force 15 December 2025) removed the first-generation limit on citizenship by descent, substantially increasing application volume.

• Quoted processing times are estimates and can vary with case complexity and demand.

• This is a processing-time update; it does not change who is eligible under the Bill C-3 regime.
