# Archives and sources: Slovakia (SK)

Where records created in Slovakia are held, whether they can be found online, and the archives and providers EasyPassport has vetted for them. The list is keyed on the country where the record was created, usually the ancestor's birthplace, which is not always the country the user is applying to. ## Can these records be found online?

Partly. Some records are online but coverage is incomplete; set the user's expectations.

The Slovak GOVERNMENT sites are not a free browse (the nine state archives are subpages of minv.sk; portal.minv.sk is registration-gated ordering) — but the records themselves ARE online and free. They're on FamilySearch's 'Slovakia, Church and Synagogue Books 1592–1935' (1.6M name-searchable images, Roman Catholic / Lutheran / Reformed / Jewish, drawn from the same Prešov / Bytča / Košice / Levoča / Banská Bystrica / Nitra / Bratislava archives) — a free account is needed and our crawler cannot reach it, so you search it yourself. For 1930/1939/1940 residence, slovakiana.sk has 623k free digitized census sheets. For 1895+ Jewish civil registration, JewishGen. A Hungarian portal won't help: MNL's 1895+ civil registers do NOT cover the Felvidék localities now in Slovakia. The OSOBITNÁ MATRIKA (Bratislava) is an application office, not a database — it registers events that happened ABROAD and issues the final Slovak-format certificate after citizenship is granted.
