# Archives and sources: Romania (RO)

Where records created in Romania are held, whether they can be found online, and the archives and providers EasyPassport has vetted for them. The list is keyed on the country where the record was created, usually the ancestor's birthplace, which is not always the country the user is applying to. ## Can these records be found online?

Yes. Records are name-searchable online or digitized, so a careful search is worth it.

Romania is far richer than its reputation: the eANR project digitized ~9.5 MILLION pages of PRE-1920 civil registers, free, at descopera.arhivelenationale.ro — scanned PDFs with per-volume _IDX.pdf NAME INDEXES. Workflow: find the locality, open the register volume, read the _IDX index, jump to the page. Coverage is selective per county and pre-1920 only. Transylvania's Hungarian-era 1895–1924 registers are HERE, in Romanian custody — you won't find them on a Hungarian portal. Post-1920 certificates come from DGEP / local stare civilă.
