# Archives and sources: Croatia (HR)

Where records created in Croatia are held, whether they can be found online, and the archives and providers EasyPassport has vetted for them. The list is keyed on the country where the record was created, usually the ancestor's birthplace, which is not always the country the user is applying to. For an ancestor born elsewhere, ask for that country's list. For the office, request channel, apostille authority and translation rules, use the "country record playbook" guide for HR.

## Can these records be found online?

Partly. Some records are online but coverage is incomplete; set the user's expectations.

18 regional state archives, one per region, each on its own domain (daz.hr Zagreb, dazd.hr Zadar, das.hr Split, dad.hr Dubrovnik, …). State Archives Zadar (dazd.hr) is the strongest — free register images sprawling well beyond Zadar into Šibenik, Split, Knin and the islands. The Croatian State Archives' register search (arhiv.hr) is a LOCATOR, not a viewer: it tells you which institution holds the book and in what form; the 14M-frame microfilm is reading-room only. Most of the other regionals are index/locator; for anywhere outside Zadar's reach, expect to order from the archive. (The national HAiS catalogue is migrating — arhinet.arhiv.hr is dead; hais.arhiv.hr is its replacement.)
