# Archives and sources: Greece (GR)

Where records created in Greece are held, whether they can be found online, and the archives and providers EasyPassport has vetted for them. The list is keyed on the country where the record was created, usually the ancestor's birthplace, which is not always the country the user is applying to. ## Can these records be found online?

No. These records cannot be found by searching the web. Do not search; collect the routing detail below and order the record offline, or suggest a specialist.

You will not find a Greek vital record by searching the web. Records live at the MUNICIPALITY in three separate books — the Ληξιαρχείο (the event), the Δημοτολόγιο (the household register) and the Μητρώο Αρρένων (the male/conscription roll, often the oldest usable record). There is no national index of any of them. gov.gr issues only acts created or amended after 2013 and requires a Greek tax ID (Taxisnet), so it is useless if you are a foreign descendant. The key detail is your ancestor's MUNICIPALITY (δήμος) OF ORIGIN — with that, an expert can retrieve the record for you.
